Case Study: Black Teacher Pipeline

I collaborated with The Brotherhood of Elders Network to produce some graphic materials they could use to kickstart conversations at the state policy level...
These two "roadmap" images, made for the Aya Education Coalition, describe the "California Black Teacher Pipeline". It's the journey that a Black Californian takes in order to become a Teacher, both as it is today and as it could be.
It was a big learning curve working with a coalition of different organizations (with differing concerns, messaging, language) all working under the Brotherhood's direction, consistently evolving the vision and its data over an 8-month stretch.
I also took extra time to learn a point of view outside my lived experience and to convey an appropriate cultural tone.
This is a living document meant to further evolve upon entering the public sphere, and is an example of the power of visual communication to spark meaningful and important discussion.
The Brotherhood of Elders Network is an intergenerational group of Black men ranging from early 20’s to mid 80’s. We celebrate our African heritage and come together for fellowship, and to do good community work: primarily around health and wellness, arts and culture, youth development, and civic engagement.
Aya Education Coalition consists of organizations and advocates committed to strengthening the Black educator pipeline and Black student achievement across California. Derived from the Adinkra symbol meaning "endurance" and "resourcefulness," Aya embodies the spirit of resilience and innovation that drives our coalition’s work.
The Aya Education Coalition is co-stewarded by The Brotherhood along with The Black Educator Advocates Network,
